When Shlomo Buchler first met Frenchie Jackson it was purely by chance. Shlomo went to the Tabia theatre to audition another little boy who, he had never met, for the roll of young Richard. It was one hour after the scheduled appointment and Shlomo was about to leave, just then a car pulled up and out popped who Shlomo explains as "The perfect child for the part" Shlomo was wearing his typical production attire: extremely loose hanging faded jeans, tennis shoes with frazzled untied laces, a tethered flannel shirt, a beanie and stubble bordering on a full fledge beard. As he approached Carol Bussey, Frenchie's Foster mother, she explained, that she could not spare any change and asked him to move on. Shlomo assured her that he was not homeless and went on to tell her about Soledad and that Frenchie would be perfect for the part. Carol explained that Frenchie was on his way to his acting class and was early so he had some time to audition. Shlomo and Frenchie sat down, still no sign of the other boy. The more they talked the more assured Shlomo was that he was the perfect child for the part. Frenchie's range and concentration really impressed Shlomo. But in all fairness Shlomo explained to Frenchie that he still had to audition the other boy before he could give him the part. Just then a very tall older boy walked in. This boy was not young Richard at all, but Shlomo interviewed him anyway. It worked out that he would be perfect for another part that Shlomo gave to him, but he never showed up for rehearsals or the shooting day. Frenchie was given the part and masterfully performed the part of young Richard.
